Topic: How to Support Young People in Developing Emotional Regulation

The ability to manage and regulate our emotions is central for our emotional well-being. Not only is it critical for our own mental health, but it is an integral part of having successful relationships with other people. Emotional regulation impacts our ability to communicate effectively, build new connections, work through life stressors, build resilience over time, and helps us repair when conflict arises.

Young people are not born with the ability to regulate their emotions. They must be directly taught, supported, and be modeled on how to develop these skills. By understanding more about what's going on in the brain, we can directly apply this knowledge and related skills, in the moment. Learning these skills helps us to more effectively respond to big emotions and helps us teach young people how to manage their feelings.
