Each year, NFAR awards grant funding to San Diego educators to help provide the educational tools that support the specialized needs of their students with autism. Just this month, we announced the 38 San Diego Autism Teachers Grant recipients for the 2010/2011 school year.
Awarded annually, the grants fill a gap in funding that is not otherwise available. Most students with an autism diagnosis have great potential but have different learning styles and curriculum support needs. Today, educators are not only faced with the challenges of educating an ever-increasing number of students on the autism spectrum, but also reduced education budgets. Teachers often resort to creating or modifying the curriculums themselves, putting in extra time, effort and their own personal expense.
To help alleviate this strain, and made possible by the funds raised at the annual San Diego Race for Autism, the average Teachers Grant award is $500 per classroom that is allotted for specialized or additional educational programs, materials and equipment needed to educate students with autism.
This year’s Teachers Grant recipients are from following school districts: San Diego Unified, Poway Unified, La Mesa/Spring Valley, Del Mar Union, Encinitas Union, Escondido Union, Chula Vista Elementary, Grossmont Union, Coronado Unified and Sweetwater Union.
To date, NFAR has awarded 190 Teacher's grants to educators across 19 different school districts, as well as Rady Children’s Hospital, Alexa’s PLAYC Toddler and PreK Programs, Sierra Academy, The Institute for Effective Education and The Country School.
