Autism in the News

We’re big fans of the NBC Tuesday night drama Parenthood and appreciate that they bring weekly attention to the realistic challenges for families with a child with Asperger’s Syndrome. Despite being the most prevalent childhood disorder today, autism is rarely tackled by primetime television.

Tomorrow night (Wed. January 25) at 9pm, FOX offers a special preview of their new series Touch that is billed as an uplifting drama about a widower who has difficulty connecting with his 11-year old son with autism. But that’s not the whole story as the father “discovers that his son possesses the gift of staggering genius — the ability to see things that no one else can and the patterns that connect seemingly unrelated events.” Keifer Sutherland stars as the father and recently commented at a press event that, “the real driving force for my character is simply communicating with my mute son.”

We’ll be watching to see how the series features autism and ASD. We’d also love to hear what you think about the show, so if you check it out, please share your thoughts with us on Facebook.
