about NFAR

Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the U.S., and one of the most critical issues of our time.  Approximately one in every 150 children in the United States - 560,000 children - has autism or a closely related disorder, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

In California, the rate of children being diagnosed with autism is even more alarming.   According to the California Department of Developmental Services, from December 1998 to December 2002, there was a 97% increase in the number of reported autism cases in California - the highest of any state.

The good news is that children with autism can learn and improve, often significantly, with the proper treatments and interventions. However, effective programs and services for children with autism are not always available.

We can help. The National Foundation for Autism Research (NFAR) recognizes the impact autism has on children, families and their communities. We created NFAR in 2005 to aid in the development, expansion and support of treatment programs and services that improve the quality of life for children and young adults living with autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders.

NFAR provides this support through two major initiatives that include grant-making and direct services.

Since 2005, NFAR has raised more than a quarter of a million dollars through our annual Race for Autism in Balboa Park.   With Race proceeds, NFAR has funded over 141 initiatives throughout San Diego in the areas of:

  • early identification and intervention
  • educational materials, equipment and technology
  • para-professional and parent training
  • treatment programs
  • after-school activities
  • adult transition programs

These programs are helping those with autism by creating new learning and social opportunities, funding studies to improve treatment and assure efficacy of treatment programs, supporting outreach to underserved populations and providing for the immediate needs at the classroom level.
