An Examination of School Preparation, Family Involvement and Outcomes

By 2013, it is estimated that more than 4000 teenagers with autism will reach adulthood in California and join the ever-growing number of adults with autism in the State. It is critical that appropriate transition programming and supports be implemented now to ensure that these young people have the greatest chance at success and independence as adults.
Recent findings from an ongoing study (jointly funded by San Diego State and NFAR), that examines how youth with ASD are prepared to leave the school system, found that while the majority of young adults participating in the study have either transitioned to secondary education, a job or an adult program, nearly a quarter (23%) do not have any formal day activities or services. Additionally, parents overwhelmingly desired to be actively involved in their child’s transition process.
Families are still needed, particularly those that are culturally or linguistically diverse. Please contact Dr. Bonnie Kraemer via email or at 619-594-3492 if you are interested in being interviewed.

Teaching Stress & Anxiety Relief Strategies to Children with Autism can have a Significant Impact |
|

A recent NFAR-supported study by Rebecca McNally Keehn, M.A. examined the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapies (traditionally found to be successful among typically developing children with anxiety) when taught to children and adolescents with autism.
Preliminary results show that fifty-eight percent of the children involved in the study no longer qualified for an anxiety diagnosis at the completion of the treatment and 40% remained free of significant anxiety at a two-month follow-up.
